Gone too soon at the age of 21, we are forever blessed by your presence in our lives and forever altered by your absence. Love you always, Mom, Dad, Pete and Chris

Everyday, but especially today we remember Michael. We remember his incredible smile and the fire in his eyes. We remember his energy and his zest for life. We remember his wonderful sense of humor and his calm and caring manner.

If you knew our son Michael, these words will seem superfluous and woefully inadequate because he was so much more than any words can begin to describe. But for those who never met Michael, we hope to convey to you the essence of his incredible spirit and joie de vivre.

Michael was a wonderful myriad of contradictions. He worked hard and he played hard. He was, at times, very quiet yet, at other times, he could be downright raucous. His open and honest nature invited you to share yourself with him yet he never revealed too much of himself -- he was a very private person.

Michael had the unique ability of relating to all walks of life. It was not simply that he could get along with many different kinds of people -- it was much more than that. He drew us all together and somehow helped us to find common ground. He saw the good in every one of us and he brought out the best in each of us. It felt good to be in the same room with Michael -- adults and kids alike.

He was not a “goody-goody." Lord knows he proved that to us time and time again! He was fun to be with; he knew how to have a good time; he made us laugh. With great humor, he challenged each of us to grow, to let go of our hang-ups, to broaden our perspective. He encouraged us to not “sweat the small stuff.” He dared us to try new things and he was there for us when we failed.

There are no words to express how much we miss him but we feel lucky to have had him in our lives no matter how brief the time. May our memories of Michael sustain us as we learn to live without him.

How will heaven be?
As far as I can see
It will have huge bells
And will be situated on clouds
It will have many golden wells
That will so often swell
Rain will be abundant
And the sun will shine all day long
Angels will play on the harp
The sweetest summer song
Music that will touch the heart
While those beneath will shed drops of sorrow
Little will they know what will happen on the morrow
But to them up above
As plain and clear it will be
As far as far as I can see
Yes there will be misty alleys
And lush green meadows
Fresh with the fragrant smell of spring
Winter will never be bitter
Summer never so hot
Autumn never so bare
And resources never so scarce
Food for all will be relished by all.
Grateful we’ll be as grateful can be
Mountains high and strong and brown
Surrounding that hidden land,
Beautiful and vast seas I see
There colour as blue as sapphire can be
And the white waves lashing upon the shore
Sitting on the flattened grey rocks
Who would not call it absolutely heavenly?
However it might actually be,
But can we still not see
There will lie behind this seen
A relieving feeling of bliss
For where not have we been
But is this not by all believed
That after one’s decease
This is the land of eternal peace
Where we all ultimately reach?

Gone Fourteen Years

Dear sweet Michael,

Your death and its aftermath forced me to choose.

I want to go back – oh how I want to go back and do it over again. I would be a better mother… I would not sleepwalk through life … I would cherish every moment with you and your brothers and your Dad…

So I do the next best thing … I choose to live in this moment as I wish I could have lived life before you left … And I thank you for that gift.

Love, Mom
